From the time I first began to collect rare and unusual conifers in 1974 I felt handicapped by the lack of a good book on conifer cultivars. The only books available were written by European authors and did not reflect the choices available in the United States. I relied heavily upon the books listed HERE on this website. They were ok but dated and had too many plants that were either no longer in cultivation or not found where I could get them for my own garden.
In 2009 I decided that the only way to have a good conifer book as a reference was to write it myself. I had many friends who were active in the conifer world and I had been collecting conifers for over 36 years. I had a good working knowledge about conifers and had over 30,000 photographs in my collection from all over the world.
I decided to take the self-published approach for one very big reason. I wanted to do the book my way and not have an editor looking over my shoulder and telling me how the publisher wanted it done. The book had to focus on the best dwarf and miniature conifers found in America. The description had to include an interesting story about the plant and be accompanied by one and often two pictures of the plant. This book had to be a readable book that a person would enjoy reading and not just stick on a shelf with encyclopedic plant books.
On the negative
side of self-publishing, there were several hurdles I had to overcome.
First: I had to learn the software
required to produce print-ready copy in a .pdf format.
Second: The design and layout might
leave a lot to be desired, but I knew my audience would prefer content over an
artistic design.
Third: I could not afford to hire an
editor so some errors were bound to slip through.
Fourth: I had to come up with the
funds to finance the book without any assurance that they would be recovered.
It took me over
a year of hard work to complete this book and have it ready for release in 2011.
I learned enough of a very complicated software to program to do what I needed
to do to produce the proper files for the printer. The layout followed other
published books and the design has gotten complements from many people. Dianne
was an excellent editor and this first book had very few errors. It has proven
to be a successful publication and led to additional titles from Coenosium
Publishing.
Small Conifers for Small Gardens focuses upon dwarf and miniature conifers that may be found in the United States. Some require diligent searching and will be difficult to locate. When I had my mail order nursery operating, this book was close to being a catalog of my offerings. If a plant was very common or did not perform well in a garden, I left it out of the book.
Below are two plants described in the book. Typically I used one page for pictures and the opposite page for the description and an interesting story about the plant or its discoverer.
